Mommy, you're mean!!!!

Its official! I've heard the words "mommy you're mean!" I've made it a whopping 7 years without anyone so much as uttering those words. That's not to say they haven't THOUGHT it, but its never left their mouths. And this morning, I heard it. And you know what my response was? Laughter. I laughed, out loud, and I laughed hard.

You may be sitting there thinking, why would one laugh at being called a mean mommy by one of her children. And you may also be thinking that it would have bothered you, and you would have had a talk with your child about it. But nope, I wasn't offended, I wasn't in need of a conversation with the child that called me mean. I was more in need of some air, to catch my breath from all the laughter.

Now, to who CALLED me mean. It was my Kaleb baby boy. And it was this morning. Todd was getting ready for work, and i was sitting on the edge of the bed talking to him. We were talking about whats going on in the rest of the week when in walks Kaleb happily chattering about how his sister had finally woken up. And, sure enough, in walks Kendyl. I picked Kendyl up, gave her her good morning hug, and continued talking with Todd. Kaleb was apparently offended by the fact that I still had Kendyl sitting on my lap, and made a pouty face, and let out one long exasperated sigh. The laugh started there. Because this little boy has figure out how to put on one heck of a show when he's upset. He sighs, he lifts his shoulders up, and drops them as he lets out the air. And his lower lip even pouts out. Its cute, and its funny.

He then of course was offended by the fact that mommy was laughing at him. And I said "whats the matter Kaleb, is mommy being mean to you?" And his eyes shot up, like "DUDE! That's EXACTLY what i was thinking, but I didn't dare say it, but since you've opened the can of worms I'm gonna hop on that band wagon, and ride it till the end." I just laughed at the look, and then he says "Yes, mommy, you mean." Again, met with more laughter. I know, I'm such a bad mommy for laughing at my child's emotions like that, but if you'd seen the looks, I would have dared you to keep a straight face as well!!!

After a second or two, i caught my breath, and I said "why is mommy mean Kaleb?" Seeing if he actually knew what was going on. He said "You mean because (said as uh-cause) you make me go nigh night!" I was ROLLING! This little kid saw his window of opportunity to tell mommy she was mean, and he was going to tell her why in the ways that hit him most. Because mommy makes his little 2 1/2 year old self go to bed!

So there you have it folks. I'm officially a mean mommy because I make my children go to sleep!!! Oh the cruelty. Oh the punishment. Oh the drama! And yet, when they get older, they'll catch on to the fact that mommy is laughing AT them in times like this, not with them, and THEN they'll REALLY call me a mean mommy!!!!

I can't believe you made it that long! It was last year that Liam said, "I hate you. Don't hug me good night."

It wasn't very funny ;) I bawled.

That is truly hysterical, I love how you write about your kids, the way you say things make me think I'm actually there and I found myself laughing as I read through the conversation :) I am surprised it came from the baby too- figured one of the older ones would have beat him to it!

My two keep "dropping" things, "falling down" etc and everything is not "uh-oh" with so much drama in the tone. But man it is definitely funny!

Thanks for the idea on locks of love too, never thought of that before but what a great idea!

Have a great day!

haha! I can totally picture him! Put that boy in acting classes! Get him an agent! haha! Loved his reasoning though...of all things - how dare you make him go to bed! The nerve!

I agree.. how did you make it THIS long? Shoooot, my kids have hated me for years lol!

I can totally picture him doing that.. in that sweet little Kaleb voice.

Now, keep laughing, because it gets even funnier as they get older. I laugh at my kids at the MOST inappropriate times. Especially when T burped at lunch yesterday, twice, and when I gave him the "you better say excuse me" eye he looked at me and said "thanks" ROFL!
