On Wednesday Dallas had a flea market at school. We'd been asked to send in a few small things from home. The kids were told "send in some toys you don't want any more." And us parents got the fine print of "things like old McDonald's toys". So, we went searching our house, and came up with an un opened tube of play dough (those really small containers, there were 10 different colors in this foot long tube!) and a few little note books from the dollar section at Target that we usually keep on hand to throw in a bag, or back pack to keep a kid busy coloring. Then, we had to send in up to one dollar in change for our child to use to purchase things at the flea market. This unit was to help end their study on money and how to count it, use it, and recognize where the cost of things comes into how much money you have. So Todd and I sat down the night before the flea market, and we came up with the change combination that would give him the most combination of coins. I think we ended up with two quarters, three dimes, three nickels, and five pennies.
Dallas was SO excited for Wednesday to come. Not only was it the flea market, but he'd come up with a solution for the teachers, and he was just TICKLED. They'd been wondering how the kids were going to keep track of what was theirs, and how to get these toys home. Well, Dallas piped in and said "why don't we just use the bags that we brought our toys into school in to keep everything we buy?" Smart boy!!! So he was feeling like he'd had a hand in planning part of this, and you know how much that can do to a 7 year olds self esteem!
We went to pick the kids up after school, and Dallas came FLYING out of the school with his zip lock gallon sized bag, FULL of stuff. And what happened next darn near had me in a teary puddle right there in the middle of the school yard. My son didn't open up his bag, and show me everything in it. He didn't brag about the money he got to spend, or how he got to get a bunch of things for himself. Do you know what my son did??? He opened that baggie up, and he pulled things out one by one. It went something like this:
D- Mommy mommy mommy! The flea market was so much fun!!!
M- Good buddy! I'm glad you had a good time! Was there a lot of fun things to see?
D- Yeah, there was!!!
M- Good!!!
D- Mommy! Look at this! I got this for Kendyl! Its a curious George book! (it was a curious George card board book!)
M- Well that was nice of you buddy!
D- And I got this for Kaleb! (it was a blue car with some light thingy on top!)
M- I bet he'll love it Dallas!!
D- And I got this one for Gabe! ( a vibrating mosquito toy from McDonald's when they had their bee movie stuff out!)
M- Wow! You got something for all your brothers and sister! That was so nice of you Dallas!
At that point, he was just beaming! He didn't care about showing me what he got for himself, until he's shown me what he'd gotten for his siblings! It just shows me how kind, and caring my kids are. They all do this. They pick things out for their siblings, before themselves. They NEVER forget!!!
It sure was a proud mommy moment! I guess it must be a sign that I'm doing something right after all!!!

Aw! And you should be proud!!
Liam's the same way (and though I hate to say, Hannah's not - I think it's the 'oldest child syndrome' kicking in?).
And it is such a GOOD feeling to know you've done at least one small thing right :D
(though I'm sure we've done more than that!)
lol
That's awesome Jamie! Way to go Mom and Way to go Dallas! How sweet of him! Hope his siblings enjoyed all their gifts!
THAT is the sweetest thing ever! Gosh, what happened in the sister dept when me and my sisters were growing up??? I even remember my sister trying to rip me off and "sell" me her stuff for money! LOL!
Anyway, that is seriously the sweetest thing ever! You should be soo proud of him! AND MOM, keep up the good work raising your kidos right! I hope my kidos are half as good as yours!

I already ooh'd and ahh'd the other day on the phone lol, but .... Awwwwwwwww!
My boys are similar. You remember my surprise(and my heart melting) when they brought me the trophy and ring when I was in the hospital and how shocked I was that J spent almost ALL of his money on his old lady mom.
Aww..our kids are awesome.
lol
Just letting you know that I LOVE the new pic of the kids at the top of the page. I couldn't tell you that I liked it on MySpace(you know our love/hate relationship, me and MySpace...okay.. maybe more HATE on my part ;)), so I'm doing it here lol.
That is sooo wonderful! I KNOW you're doing a lot of things right, gal! And you can add to the list that you just gave THIS first grade teacher a new idea to culminate counting money next year! I'm off to cut and paste so I actually keep track of the idea! LOL
